You may have seen this representative wave from Japan; it is one of the most well-known masterpieces called [神奈川衝浪裏 The Great Wave off Kanagawa], by one of the masters of Ukiyo-e, Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎). The exhibition titled “History of UKIYO-E -Five Great Ukiyo-e Painting Masters" hosts at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei, features 146 authentic Ukiyo-e paintings, including this iconic one.
Ukiyo-e is a Japanese art style that flourished in the Edo period (17th to 19th century). The subjects are mainly people's daily life, landscape, drama, etc. In addition to the value of art, it also have historical significance in preserving the image of people's livelihood.

Apart from the national treasure master Katsushika Hokusai, there also feature the works of Kitagawa Utamaro (喜多川 歌麿) who is good at depicting classical oriental beauties, the mystery artist Tōshūsai Sharaku(東洲斎 写楽) captures the vivid expression of actors, the travel lover Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) records scenic while traveling, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 國芳), the expert of visualizing the heroes and warriors in Chinese and Japanese stories. The five great masters each with their own unique characteristics that we could enjoy all at once.

The exhibition also reproduced the scenes of several paintings, not only allowing people to walk into the picture and take photos, but also having more integrated into the atmosphere of the times in Ukiyo-e.
